The Design Grand Slam

For years, I refused to purchase an iPod for a certain someone in my life (hint: she gave birth to me). I tried your $29.99 deals you find on sites like Computer Geeks. I tried one of the older generation iRiver players. In essence, anything but an iPod. Of course, she eventually went out and bought one on her own. The other devices all worked well and good (for the most part). But the thing that really bugged me was that my mom called every one of them "iPods." I found it slightly annoying and amusing all at once. I (translate)

I’ve been in a weird mood lately (notice how my blogs have gotten a bit quieter) so part of me was dreading 360|Flex. It’s always great to see everyone but I wasn’t sure I’d been tapped into the community enough lately. I was partly right and partly wrong. It turns out the Flex community has [...] (translate)

The newest version of FlexUnit released on Adobe's Open Source site includes a spiffy new UI. It's much easier to see what test failed, where, and why. It also includes a feature to help identify tests that don't make any assertions! Below are a couple of screen shots showing the new UI in action. (translate)

It seems as though folks are still popping by the blog every so often to say hello and drop a few comments - but I’ve been a poor host! I haven’t written anything of value in quite some time! In the next couple of days I’m hoping to post a bit about Railo, [...] (translate)

Worse Interface Paradigm?

Let’s take a look at PowerCursor It’s a new Flash toolkit to create “interfaces you can touch”. Suppose to make buttons act more like real world objects I guess by providing an optically invoked haptic feedback. The only one that I could even remotely think of a use for in a real world environment is the On/Off [...] (translate)

Director: The future?

I heard a few rumors around January time, that the next version of Director will contain AS3. Which makes sense, if they are going to continue to develop it as a stand alone product - bring it inline with their other products. Although I still feel it would be better to kill off Director (Not entirely [...] (translate)

Microsoft acquired Powerset, a natural language search company. Potentially allowing Microsoft to change the advertising game that Google currently dominates. Rather than selling adverts based on keywords, they could target the adverts based on the contextual meaning of the search phrase. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10007049-56.html?hhTest=1 (translate)

Good news! The US Space Command has just granted my request to redistribute satellite orbit data. Expect to see satellites coming to EarthBrowser soon. Here's the first public example of the EarthBrowser plugin, it requires Flash 9. it shows the current position of the International Space Station. Use your mouse wheel if you have one, or click the globe and use arrow keys to zoom out and see the Hubble Space Telescope and the TOPEX/Poseidon satellites. This is a simple example with no extra datasets or interface elements and limited zooming. I hope to have the Javascript API available sometime next month.Imagine (translate)
